Well it's a mess outside this morning. Snow and sleet - it's a stay at home event for sure. The weather folks have been talking about this for a long time. Just a side note here - sometimes I watch Greg Fishel and I fall asleep every time he starts doing the weather - all those lines and charts just does me in. Just say it and let's get on with the program.
Anyhow my plan is to sew today so I moved my Featherweight to the living room. I bought this little sewing machine and table from some folks near Winston Salem off Craigslist many years ago. Not only was the price great but both the table and machine were in excellent condition and it has the original case, all kinds of attachments, and instruction book. Singer made these machines and they are workhorses. Mine was made in 1947 and still sews like a dream. Great machine to take on trips and to use in classes. One of the best buys I've made on Craigslist.
So stay inside today and be safe.

A Cardboard Path
I have a plan - it starts with cardboard and hopefully will end up being a nice walkway/path to the garden from the chicken coop or vice versa. This is the way I walk every time I go to the garden so I thought a "real path" might be appropriate. The cardboard will (should) kill the weeds and we'll go from there.
My raised beds are just a disaster! Nothing but weeds and more weeds. So the other day when it was so nice (I think last Wednesday) I dug around a little. Our weather has been unpredictable so when a nice day comes along and I'm home . . . . well, I need to be doing something here.

My Christmas Present
Some yoyo's stole a car night before last and were being chased by the sheriff's dept and they must have tried to turn the corner and ran into my fence. I saw the police lights down there during the night but this was around 2-3 o'clock so I left well enough alone. And there had already been a traffic stop around 1 - it was a busy night in my little neighborhood.
It rained all morning and didn't see this till about 11 when I went to let the chickens out. And the gate was wide open! My neighbor came over when I went out this morning and was telling me what she knew.
There were 3 of them and two evidently ran and they got the canine dog out. Don't know what all happened. I'll go online and get a police report today.
Called the police dept, the person on duty is home asleep so he will contact me later. They couldn't figure out who owned the property! And they don't notify you when stuff happens - it's amazing.
Have talked with police dept and I'm screwed or I should say it's doubtful for getting any money from anyone to repair the fence. Total loss of fence - the car had already been towed but parts are left behind. So I figure if these guys stole a car they won't have insurance and it will be a couple of thousand to fix the fence.
Steve (neighbor) came over and we fixed a temporary fence with those panels I had for Lily's pen which were never used. There's a reason I always keep everything - you never know when you might need it.

So I guess that's my Christmas present this year. But in the grand scheme of things - the fence is temporarily fixed, Lily, Little Kitty, the chickens and I are fine, nobody broke into the house trying to run away from the police (so I didn't get to shoot anybody), and I have friends to help when needed.
So Merry Christmas to everybody and hope you stay safe and have an uneventful holiday!

The Elf on the Shelf
It's the first of December and it's time to get that little Elf out of the closet or wherever he has been hiding. I've made all three grandchildren a pillowcase for the holidays with Elf on the Shelf fabric. They're all the same so no disagreements over this one or that one being mine.
The Elf on the Shelf®: A Christmas Tradition is a cleverly rhymed children’s book explaining the story of Santa’s scout elves, who are sent to be Santa’s eyes and ears at children’s homes around the world!

November Flowers
It's almost Turkey Day and I've got zinnas and marigolds blooming. It's chilly this morning (mid 50's) and I'm sure we'll have a frost soon and these little flowers will be toast.
But I have sasanquas (fall camellias) blooming and they are just lovely. The camellias have started budding and they'll be blooming later when it's really cold and dreary. I am not a cold weather person!
